Local SEO for Businesses: A Complete Guide for Indian Cities

A step-by-step local SEO guide: Google Business Profile, reviews, NAP consistency, location pages and tracking calls from Maps for Indian businesses.

When someone searches "dentist near me" or "CA firm in Banjara Hills", Google shows a map with three businesses before any website. Getting into that map pack is what local SEO is about. Here is how to do it properly.

1. Claim and complete your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the single most important local ranking factor you control.

  • Choose the most specific primary category ("Orthodontist", not "Dentist", if that is your focus) and add relevant secondary categories.
  • Add every service with a short description, your exact opening hours and holiday hours.
  • Upload real photos of your office, team and work. Add new photos every month.
  • Post updates and offers weekly. It shows Google the business is active.

2. Keep your NAP identical everywhere

NAP stands for name, address and phone number. It must be written the same way on your website, Google profile, Justdial, IndiaMART, Practo, Facebook and every other directory. "Shop No. 4" on one site and "Shop 4" on another is a small thing, but inconsistencies weaken Google's confidence in your location.

3. Build a steady flow of genuine reviews

Reviews affect both ranking and whether people click. Ask every happy customer, at the moment they are happiest, with a direct review link sent on WhatsApp. Reply to every review, good or bad, within a few days. Never buy reviews or offer incentives for them. It breaks Google's policies and can get your profile suspended.

4. Make your website locally relevant

  • Put your city and main service in the homepage title tag and H1.
  • Add LocalBusiness schema with your address, phone, opening hours and map coordinates.
  • Embed a Google Map on your contact page.
  • Create separate area pages only if you genuinely serve those areas and can write something unique about each one. Copy-paste pages with the city name swapped do more harm than good.

5. Earn local mentions

Links and mentions from local news sites, associations, chambers of commerce, colleges and event pages tell Google you are part of the local community. Sponsoring a local event or writing a useful guide for a city publication is worth more than a hundred random directory links.

6. Track what local SEO brings in

In your Google Business Profile, check calls, direction requests and website clicks each month. On your website, add UTM tags to the GBP website link (for example ?utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=gbp) so you can see in GA4 exactly how many leads came from Maps.

The short version: a complete Google profile, consistent NAP, a steady stream of real reviews, a locally relevant website and proper tracking. Do these five things well and you will outrank most competitors in your area.
