Search engine optimisation (SEO) is how you get your website to show up when people search on Google for what you sell. Done well, it brings a steady flow of visitors who are already looking for you, without paying for every click. In 2026, SEO also decides whether AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews mention your business when someone asks for a recommendation.

This guide explains how SEO works today, step by step, in plain language. It is written for business owners and marketers in India, but the principles work for any market.

What is SEO and why does it matter for your business?

When someone searches "best dentist near me" or "digital marketing agency in Hyderabad", Google picks a handful of pages to show from millions of options. SEO is the work of making your pages the most relevant, trustworthy and useful answer to that search.

There are three reasons SEO is worth investing in:

  • High-intent traffic: people searching for a service are usually close to buying, unlike people scrolling social media.
  • Compounding results: a page that ranks keeps bringing visitors month after month, while paid ads stop the moment the budget runs out.
  • Trust: many buyers trust organic results more than ads, and a strong search presence makes every other channel work better.

The four pillars of SEO

Almost every SEO task falls into one of four areas. You need all four working together.

  1. Keyword research: understanding exactly what your customers type into Google.
  2. On-page SEO: making each page clearly match one search topic.
  3. Technical SEO: making sure Google can find, load and understand your site.
  4. Authority: earning reviews, mentions and backlinks that prove you are trustworthy.

Step 1: Keyword research that matches buying intent

Keyword research is where most SEO goes right or wrong. The goal is not to find the keywords with the most searches. It is to find the searches made by people who could become customers.

Think in terms of search intent

  • Informational: "what is SEO", "how to reduce cost per lead". Great for blog posts and building trust.
  • Commercial: "best SEO agency in India", "SEO services price". People comparing options.
  • Transactional and local: "SEO company in Hyderabad", "website design near me". People ready to contact someone.

Where to find keyword ideas

  • Google's autocomplete and the "People also ask" box on any search result.
  • Google Search Console, which shows the searches your site already appears for.
  • The Google Ads Keyword Planner for rough search volumes.
  • Your own sales calls and WhatsApp chats. The exact words customers use are often the best keywords.

Long-tail keywords, longer and more specific phrases like "SEO services for real estate developers", have fewer searches but are easier to rank for and usually convert better.

Step 2: On-page SEO, one page for one topic

Each important keyword group should have its own page. A single "Services" page that lists everything will rarely rank for any of them. Then make every page clearly about its topic:

  • Title tag: put the main keyword near the start and keep it under about 60 characters, for example "SEO Services in India | Local & Technical SEO".
  • Meta description: a clear, benefit-led summary of about 150 to 160 characters. It does not directly affect rankings but strongly affects how many people click.
  • One H1 heading that says what the page is about, with H2 and H3 subheadings in a logical order.
  • Clean URLs such as /services/seo/ rather than /page?id=123.
  • Internal links between related pages, using descriptive anchor text, so visitors and Google can find your key pages.
  • Image alt text that describes the image, which helps accessibility and image search.

Write for people first. Use your keyword naturally where it fits, and cover the questions a buyer would actually ask. Repeating a phrase again and again ("keyword stuffing") hurts more than it helps.

Step 3: Technical SEO, the foundation

If Google cannot crawl, load or understand your website, great content will not rank. These are the technical basics to check:

  • Mobile-first design: Google ranks the mobile version of your site, and most Indian searches happen on phones.
  • Page speed and Core Web Vitals: aim for the main content to load in under 2.5 seconds. Compress images, use modern formats like WebP and remove scripts you do not need.
  • HTTPS: a secure site is a basic trust signal.
  • XML sitemap and robots.txt: help Google discover your pages. Submit your sitemap in Google Search Console.
  • No broken links or duplicate pages: fix 404 errors and use canonical tags so Google knows which version of a page is the main one.
  • Structured data (schema markup): code that tells search engines what your business, services, articles and FAQs are. It can also help you get richer results in Google.

Step 4: Local SEO for Google Maps

If you serve customers in a city or area, local SEO is often the fastest win. When people search "near me" or add a city name, Google shows a map with three businesses at the top. To appear there:

  • Complete every section of your Google Business Profile: categories, services, hours, photos and description.
  • Keep your business name, phone number and address exactly the same everywhere online.
  • Ask every happy customer for a review, and reply to every review.
  • Post regular updates and offers on your profile.

We cover this in detail in our complete local SEO guide for Indian cities.

Step 5: Content that earns rankings

Google rewards content that is genuinely helpful and shows real experience. A useful way to think about it is E-E-A-T: experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness.

  • Answer the real questions your customers ask, in clear, simple language.
  • Show proof of experience: examples, processes, photos of real work and the name of the team behind the content.
  • Build topic clusters: one main guide on a topic, linked to shorter articles that each go deeper into one sub-question.
  • Update important pages regularly so they stay accurate.

One genuinely useful article a month beats ten thin ones written only to fit in keywords.

Step 6: Backlinks and authority

Backlinks are links from other websites to yours. Google treats them as recommendations, so quality matters far more than quantity. Good ways to earn them:

  • Get listed on trusted directories and industry associations relevant to your business.
  • Partner with suppliers, clients or local organisations who can link to you.
  • Publish original guides, checklists or data that others want to reference.
  • Contribute expert comments or articles to industry publications.

Avoid buying links in bulk or using link schemes. They can lead to Google penalties that are slow and expensive to recover from.

Step 7: Optimise for AI search (AEO and GEO)

More people now ask AI assistants for answers and recommendations. Optimising for these tools is often called AEO (answer engine optimisation) or GEO (generative engine optimisation). The good news is that it builds on the same foundations as good SEO:

  • Answer questions directly: start sections with a clear one- or two-sentence answer, then explain.
  • Use FAQ sections on key pages, marked up with FAQ schema.
  • Be consistent everywhere: the same business name, services and details on your website, Google profile and social media help AI tools understand who you are.
  • Get mentioned on trusted sites: AI tools lean on sources they already trust, such as reviews, directories, news and industry websites.

Step 8: Measure what matters

Rankings alone do not pay salaries. Track the whole journey from search to lead:

  • Google Search Console: impressions, clicks, average position and the queries you appear for.
  • Google Analytics 4: organic visitors, engagement and, most importantly, form submissions, calls and WhatsApp clicks from organic search.
  • Google Business Profile insights: calls, direction requests and website clicks from Maps.

Review these monthly. Look for pages with lots of impressions but few clicks (improve the title and description) and pages that get traffic but no leads (improve the offer and call to action).

Common SEO mistakes to avoid

  • Targeting broad, highly competitive keywords before ranking for specific, local ones.
  • Using the same title and description on every page.
  • Slow, heavy websites with large images and too many plugins.
  • Copying content from other websites.
  • Expecting results in a few weeks and stopping too early.
  • Trusting anyone who guarantees a number-one ranking on Google. No one can honestly promise that.

Frequently asked questions about SEO

How long does SEO take to show results?

Most businesses start seeing movement in rankings within 3 to 6 months, depending on competition, how old the website is and how much work it needs. Local SEO and fixing technical issues can show results sooner. SEO compounds over time, so the gains usually keep growing after the first year.

Is SEO better than Google Ads?

They do different jobs. Google Ads brings traffic from the day you switch it on but stops when you stop paying. SEO takes longer but keeps bringing visitors without paying per click. Most growing businesses use both: ads for immediate leads and SEO for long-term, lower-cost growth.

Can I do SEO for my business myself?

Yes, the basics are very doable: a complete Google Business Profile, clear page titles, one page per service, useful content and asking customers for reviews. Technical SEO, content strategy at scale and link building are where an experienced SEO agency usually saves time and avoids costly mistakes.

What is AEO or AI search optimisation?

AEO (answer engine optimisation) means making your business easy for AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews to understand, trust and recommend. It builds on good SEO: clear answers to real questions, structured data, consistent business details and mentions on trusted websites.

How much do SEO services cost in India?

It depends on the size of the website, the number of locations, how competitive your industry is and how much content is needed. Be cautious of very cheap packages that promise guaranteed number-one rankings. No honest SEO agency can guarantee a specific position on Google.

The short version: find the searches your buyers make, give each one a fast, clear and genuinely helpful page, make your site technically sound, build real authority and track leads, not just rankings.
